NCAT Photography trainer Ali McCanns new body of work ‘Joy’

NCAT Photography trainer Ali McCann has a new body of work entitled ‘Joy’ which will be shown in the upcoming group exhibition ‘States of Disruption’ at the Centre for Contemporary Photography opening tomorrow, Friday the 12th of August from 6-8pm. Come along and show your support!

States of Disruption investigates the destabilisation of the image and the self in the post-truth age, through the catalyst of photography in the ‘now’. This exhibition brings together twelve Australian and international artists working in screen and photographic practices set against the backdrop of the vast social, cultural and economic disruptions that have occurred over the last two years, as well as the ongoing re-evaluation of how the visual operates in a constant process of disruption.

States of Disruption charts the fragility of the assumptions that our reality is predicated upon, and amplifies an array of voices: from the wary and questioning to the comic and exultant.

NCAT Photography Trainer: Marcus Newman

NCAT Photography trainer Marcus Newman has been steadily working on a new series of chemigrams. Marcus is an award-winning photographer from Melbourne, Australia. Exploring alternative processes, his work bridges the gap between the analogue and digital.

A Chemigram is an experimental camera-less photographic technique. Experimentation and manipulation of light-sensitive paper creates a unique one of a kind image. Light, resists (oil, sunscreen, tooth paste, etc) and photographic chemistry all have different effects on the media. The work is then digitised and manipulated using a range of digital techniques.

Industry Speaker: Lilli Waters

It was an absolute pleasure to have Lilli Waters visit us last week as a guest speaker for our students. Thank you for your incredibly candid insights into your practice as a fine arts photographer, we’re all still reeling from the presentation of your work.

Lilli Waters (born 1983, Armidale, NSW) is a fine arts photographer whose work explores the human condition through dramatic images of the female form in haunting, windswept landscapes. A Lilli Waters image has a painterly quality, evoking the Pre-Raphaelites with macabre, foreboding elements, a jewel-like palette and sensitive use of light. Waters makes use of translucent fabrics and long hair to obscure the identities of her subjects, suggesting that the image might be just as much a mirror for the viewer, as it is a portrait.

Lilli’s work has been exhibited to much acclaim in Italy, Germany, Japan, the UK, the US and Australia. Her images have appeared in publications around the globe – including Vogue Living (Aus), Belle Magazine (Aus), Art Aesthetica (UK), Austrian Living (Austria), Jane by the Grey Attic (Aus) and The Opera Magazine (Germany) as well as appeared in feature films, including Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed (USA). She has been a finalist in the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize (2021), Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Art (2021), Fisher’s Ghost Art Award (2020), Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize (2020), Du Rietz Art Awards (2020), Percival Photographic Art Prize (2020), National Portrait Prize (2019), Australian Photography Awards (2018) and Art Aesthetica Art Award (2018).

Lilli is represented by Curatorial & Co. gallery in NSW, and Metro gallery and Modern Times in VIC.

‘Restricted Access’

NCAT Photography are excited to announce that ‘Restricted Access’, a virtual exhibition and fundraiser by Certificate IV and Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging students is now live.

In previous years students have contributed black and white photographic artworks which were exhibited and auctioned off as a method of raising money for a charity of their choosing. This year 100% of the proceeds will go to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) from a virtual exhibition and fundraiser. The ASRC is Australia’s largest human right organisation providing support to people seeking asylum. They are an independent not-for-profit organisation whose programs support and empower people seeking asylum to maximise their own physical, mental and social well being.

With a target of AUD$500.00, we ask that anyone who can make a donation do so via the “Donate to the ASRC” button.

Students and trainers collaborated to create a virtual exhibition, ‘Persona’, which carefully considered the layout, size and sequence of the artworks. Congratulations to all of our Diploma students on curating their first virtual exhibition.
